California, lake, recreation, blue-green algae, pH, odors, fishery, chemical savings
Reservoir Size:
Lake is approximately 500 surface acres, with a maximum depth of 65 ft, mean depth of 24 ft, and estimated volume of 12,000 acre-ft. Lake’s east arm is 2.5 miles long covering 43 acres, with a 20 ft maximum depth and an 8 ft mean depth.
SolarBee Installation:
Date: June 2006 Installed seven (7) SB10000v12 units spread throughout the eastern arm of the lake.
Project Objectives:
Lake has had a history of blue-green algae blooms, elevated pH levels, occasional fish kills, and undesirable odors. The objectives of SolarBees’ longdistance circulation in the east arm are to: 1) to control harmful algal blooms and associated elevated pH levels; 2) reduce or eliminate periodic odors and fish kills; and 3) reduce the amount of chemicals previously used to control blue-green algae blooms.
Project Results:
Results from the first year indicate that all objectives are being met. Customer reports that water quality in the east arm is the best they have seen in recent memory, without blue-green algae blooms, odors, high pH values, or fish kills – and all without having to use chemical treatments. This is not the case elsewhere in the lake. Furthermore, lake-wide bass tournaments are being won in the east arm where the SolarBees are located. Customer is very happy with the realized benefits of long-distance circulation.
